The 2021 Edinburgh Finance Conference is one of the largest student-run, non-profit finance conferences in the UK. Our mission is to inspire the leaders of tomorrow through captivating presentations while giving them a chance to connect.

2021 Theme - Disruption

This year’s theme is ‘Disruption’ which is highly relevant to the current geo-economical atmosphere.
We hope that this conference will serve as a virtual platform to encourage dialogue, educate the student population and enrich the community’s opportunities for individuals interested in modern financial topics.

Maxim Piessen

Lead of AI & Data, IntellectEU

Maxim Piessen is a Lead of AI & Data at IntellectEU, based in Belgium. His main focus is to educate clients on Artificial Intelligence and to co-create potential solutions to their challenges. Maxim was also a lead creator on the ‘Spread Love Not Viruses’ campaign that raised money for the Covid-19 Disaster Response Fund. He joins the panelists at EFC 2021 to explain and discuss using explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to power personalisation.

Andrew Weir

Regional Senior Partner and Vice Chairman, KPMG

As a key figure in Hong Kong, Andrew Weir is the Regional Senior Partner of KPMG, Vice Chairman of KPMG China and Global Chairman of Asset Management and Real Estate. He is the former chairman of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Listing Committee. With Andrews background in national and regional roles focused, on chairing the UK-china corridor it is clear that internationalism is a top priority. Andrews talk “Navigating through disruption” will be based on his experience as a council member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and his appointment by the HKSAR government as Director of the Financial Services Development Council. Andrews area of expertise include asset management, capital markets and financial services.

Umer Suleman

Finance & Risk Specialist, Islamic Finance

Umer has over 15 years of experience within the assurance and risk management arena, with advisement roles across a variety of businesses and sectors. During his 7 years at HSBC, Umer was Head of KYC Risk globally within their Global Banking & Markets business, Head of Business & Conduct Risk for MENA within Retail Banking.

Umer is also a subject matter expert in the Shariah Governance space and successfully managed the shariah certification of Yielders, the UK’s first FCA approved fintech. He has also advised the UK government on alternative finance schemes and is currently serving as a non-exec advisor to a number of tech start-ups and NGOs and sits on the board of UKIFC, UK operations of Wahed Invest and the Islamic Council of Europe. Umer holds a PG Diploma in Governance Risk & Compliance from Manchester Business School, and started his career in Ernst & Young as part of the specialist PFI group.

Russ Shaw, MBE

Founder of London Tech Advocates

Russ Shaw is the founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates. He originally founded Tech London Advocates in 2013 to ensure an independent voice of the technology community was heard, but with a focus on the private sector. Since then he has been championing London as a global tech hub and campaigning to address some of the biggest challenges facing tech companies in the UK.

Global Tech Advocates, founded in 2015, is now present in 17 hubs around the globe, with over 12,000 members. In 2019 Russ launched the inaugural GTA Festival, taking place in China and bringing the international network together for the first time.

Russ was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2021 for services to technology and to business in London. He is a founding partner of London Tech Week, a London Tech Ambassador for the Mayor of London and Advisory Board member for Founders4Schools and the Government’s Digital Skills Partnership. In 2019, Russ was recognised as a ‘Tech Titan’ in the Evening Standard’s Progress 1000 list of London’s most influential people.
